2024 garden resolutions

I don’t really believe in New Year’s resolutions, but I sure do believe in having goals! Here are a few of mine for 2024 in the garden:

  1. Successfully start seeds in my basement. I need to rig up a lighting contraption, but I have a good idea of how to do this and I’m excited to get started. I’d like to be able to start a lot more seeds indoors than I did last year because…

  2. Plant the hillside/side yard with a creative ground cover tapestry. I got a lot of fun ideas from the book, Covering Ground: Unexpected Ideas for Landscaping with Colorful Low-Maintenance Ground Covers, by Barbara W. Ellis, and I’m excited to get creative with it. However, it’s a large area and I don’t want to go broke trying to fill it in! It’s currently covered in cardboard and leaves for the winter, but more on that another time.

  3. Create a more intentional design for the garden on the right side of my front yard. Last year, I broadcast a lovely and bright annual seed mix from American Meadows, but I’m ready to make some more long-term commitments to that area.

  4. Finish pulling out the dreaded vinca next to the driveway. I started this project in the fall, but wasn’t able to get it all out before it got too cold.

  5. Try growing some new vegetables in my raised beds.

  6. Get rid of some more grass!

What goals do you have for the garden in 2024? Everyone says start small and manageable and, while I agree that’s very good advice, I will admit that I have never successfully taken it one small step at a time in my own yard. Then again, I love this work, and can almost never get enough of it.

Speaking of which, now is a great time to plan for 2024. If you’re looking for a little advice or something more to make your garden dreams a reality, why don’t we talk? I might be able to help.
